The Humane Society of Kandiyohi County

Text Box: MISSION STATEMENT

The Humane Society of Kandiyohi County believes there is a unique and reciprocal bond between humans and animals that can be a vital and positive influence in society. Because of this belief, we provide a safe and sheltering heaven for lost and abandoned animals pending placement in a suitable permanent home. We also promote responsible care and training for household pets through education and public awareness.

About Us

The Humane Society of Kandiyohi County (HSKC) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to help abused, neglected, abandoned and stray animals as well as to educate the public on the proper care of animals and to promote the spaying and neutering of companion animals. We take in animals from the City of Willmar and Kandiyohi County. We also impound animals for the cities of Kerkhoven, New London, Spicer, Kandiyohi, Pennock, Lake Lillian and Raymond. *

Our organization was started in the early 1970’s in conjunction with the veterinary practice of Drs. Molnau and Olson. That precedent continued until Sept. of 2002 when the HSKC took over the area previously occupied by the Small Animal Clinic on Trott Avenue. On October 1, 2003 that building was sold and the HSKC itself became homeless.  On March 1, 2004, we re-opened in the building we are currently in.  However, this again is only temporary.  We are eager to relocate to a permanent home and need your help in doing so!

We currently are funded by a lump sum dollar amount from Kandiyohi County and earn income from the City of Willmar for impounding and boarding their stray animals.  The city pays a set amount for each animal per day the first 5 days it is held, giving it a chance to be claimed by its owner, at the HSKC. When the 5 days are up, the HSKC takes over the care and expense of each animal. In addition, money comes in via adoptions, pet claims, donations, memberships and promotions.

We incur expenses for our staff, which includes a licensed veterinary technician, an office manager, and kennel staff to care for all the animals we take in.

Donors and volunteers also help provide the financial support and labor required to operate the HSKC. Through the volunteer program we have been able to: give many animals a second chance, offer a discount on spaying and neutering, give adults and teens the opportunity to do community service in a safe place and provide educational programming through the schools and supervised tours.

Our goals are: a larger, new building designed for animal care in addition to trained investigative staff and help for people who can no longer keep their animals due to health or economic reasons and boarding services. Additional needs are always litter, laundry detergent, paper towels, bleach, grooming supplies, vaccines and many other misc. items.

We need new members to help us continue to save animals.  If you are interested in becoming a member or obtaining information, please  complete the membership form on the "Publications" page of this site or call 235- 7612.

THANK YOU!!!
